About NJHBOTY
New Jersey Home Brewer of the Year
What is NJHBOTY?
The New Jersey Home Brewer of the Year (NJHBOTY) is a comprehensive tracking system that recognizes excellence in New Jersey home brewing across multiple competitions throughout the year. This prestigious title is awarded to the brewer who demonstrates consistent excellence across different beer styles and competitions.
NJHBOTY combines results from three major New Jersey home brewing competitions:
🍺 Garden State
Annual home brewing competition showcasing the best of New Jersey's brewing talent.
Visit Garden State Competition →🏆 New Jersey State Fair
The premier state fair home brewing competition, featuring the best brewers from across New Jersey.
Visit State Fair Competition →🎵 Motown MASH
A celebration of home brewing culture with competitions and community events.
Visit Motown MASH →How Scoring Works
The NJHBOTY scoring system is designed to reward both consistent performance and exceptional achievements. Points are awarded based on placement in competitions, with additional bonuses for Best of Show recognition.
🏅 Regular Competition Points
🏆 Best of Show Bonus Points
Example Calculation
If a brewer wins 1st place in a category (5 points) AND gets Best of Show 1st place (+9 points), they would receive a total of 14 points for that entry.
Competition Cycles
NJHBOTY recognizes excellence across different time periods and competition formats. Each cycle has its own unique characteristics and scoring approach:
🏆 HBOTY (Home Brewer of the Year)
Competition Cycle
Garden State → NJ State Fair → Motown MASH (all in the same calendar year)
This is the traditional NJHBOTY competition, recognizing the best overall brewer of the year.
Scoring System
- 1st Place: 5 points
- 2nd Place: 3 points
- 3rd Place: 1 point
- Best of Show bonuses: +9, +7, +5, +9 (Mead/Cider)
🏘️ Club of the Year
Competition Cycle
Motown MASH (Fall) → Garden State (Spring) → NJ State Fair (Summer)
This cross-year cycle allows SCUBA to announce the Club of the Year winner at the State Fair competition.
Scoring System
Same as HBOTY, but points are aggregated by homebrew club. The club with the most total points wins.
🎯 Versatile Brewer
Competition Cycle
NJ State Fair → Motown MASH → Garden State
This cross-year cycle recognizes brewers who excel across the largest number of different BJCP styles.
Scoring System
- 1 point per unique BJCP subcategory (e.g., "3A", "M1A")
- 1 point per unique BJCP category (e.g., "3", "M1")
- 2 bonus points for medaling in 2 beverage groups
- 3 bonus points for medaling in all 3 beverage groups (Beer, Mead, Cider)
Tie-breakers: Fewest total medals, then most 1st place Versa medals, then most 2nd place Versa medals.
How Standings Are Determined
The NJHBOTY standings are calculated using a comprehensive ranking system that considers multiple factors to ensure fair and meaningful competition:
1. Total Points
Primary ranking factor - the sum of all competition and Best of Show points earned during the year.
2. Best of Show Wins
First tiebreaker - number of Best of Show victories (any placement).
3. Total Medals
Second tiebreaker - total number of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes.
4. Gold Medals
Third tiebreaker - number of 1st place finishes.
5. Silver Medals
Fourth tiebreaker - number of 2nd place finishes.
6. Bronze Medals
Final tiebreaker - number of 3rd place finishes.
